76-YEAR-OLD WOMAN ARRESTED AFTER FIRING FLARE GUN AT NEIGHBOR

WEST BABYLON, N.Y. – A quiet senior community in Suffolk County was shaken this week after police say a 76-year-old woman opened fire on her neighbor with a flare gun, striking him in the face and leaving him hospitalized with significant injuries.

Authorities identified the suspect as Kathleen Shuman, a longtime resident of a 55-and-older community in West Babylon. The incident happened on Monday afternoon and quickly drew widespread attention because of the unusual weapon involved.

A Feud Turns Violent

Neighbors told reporters that Shuman and the victim had a history of disagreements. While no one expected their disputes to turn violent, some admitted there had been visible tension between the two.

“I’ve known her for a while, and she’s always been really calm,” said one resident. “This just doesn’t make sense to me. I can’t believe she would do something like this.”

Police have not yet provided details about what exactly triggered the attack. However, investigators confirmed that the flare gun blast caused the victim substantial pain and physical injury, serious enough to require immediate medical attention.

The man, whose name has not been released, was transported to a local hospital where he is said to be recovering.

Court Appearance and Bail

On Tuesday, Shuman appeared in court to face charges related to the shooting. She denied the accusations through her attorney, though prosecutors argued that the act was intentional and dangerous.

A Suffolk County judge set bail at $5,000 cash and issued a strict order of protection, barring Shuman from contacting or approaching the victim.

The unusual case of a senior citizen accused of a violent flare gun attack left many in the courtroom stunned. Flare guns are typically used as maritime signaling devices, not weapons, but in this case, prosecutors contend it was used in a deliberate act of assault.

Community Shock and Concerns

The management company overseeing the 55-plus community issued a statement following the incident, confirming they are cooperating fully with police and reviewing safety procedures to ensure the well-being of residents.

Some neighbors expressed fear that even in a retirement-oriented community, personal disputes can escalate into dangerous confrontations.

“We move here thinking it’s safe, peaceful, and quiet,” said another resident. “But this incident shows that problems between neighbors can spiral out of control anywhere.”

A Rare and Alarming Case

Incidents involving flare guns are extremely rare, especially in residential neighborhoods. While not traditionally classified as firearms, flare guns can cause severe burns, lacerations, and permanent damage when discharged at close range.

Law enforcement officials are now examining how Shuman obtained the device and whether additional charges could be filed.

Experts also noted that the case raises important questions about the regulation of non-traditional weapons in communities designed for older adults.

Ongoing Investigation

The Suffolk County Police Department has not released further details about the victim’s identity or condition but said his injuries are not believed to be life-threatening. Detectives continue to investigate what may have led to the confrontation.

For now, the community remains rattled. What was once a quiet enclave for seniors has become the scene of an unusual and disturbing act of violence—one that many residents say they will never forget.
