Colorado Springs Officer Fires on Fleeing Suspect Carrying Two Guns

Colorado Springs, CO – A tense and dangerous confrontation unfolded late at night in downtown Colorado Springs, when police officers were forced to fire on a suspect who fled while carrying two firearms outside The Mansion Nightclub.

The incident began with a 911 call reporting that a man was seen in the parking lot at 19 Avenue 19, directly in front of the popular club. According to the caller, the suspect — described as a Black male — was holding what appeared to be a semi-automatic rifle resembling an M4. Witnesses stated the man was shouting aggressively at a group of individuals who appeared to be intoxicated.

“He’s screaming at people with the gun in his hand, like he’s ready to shoot this place up,” the caller told the dispatcher. “He’s got it low, but in a way that looks like he’s about to use it.”

Rapid Escalation in the Parking Lot

Police units quickly responded to the scene. As officers arrived, they were informed that the suspect had retreated into a white Mercedes parked nearby. Witnesses said he was attempting to conceal himself behind the vehicle’s door, while the crowd began to scatter in panic.

Officers gave repeated verbal commands, ordering the man to show his hands and drop the weapon. Instead, the suspect bolted from the car, running across the lot with a firearm still in his grasp. Body-worn camera audio captured the escalating chaos:

“Put your hands up! Get your hands out of your pockets! Drop the gun!” officers shouted as the man fled.

At that moment, the suspect reportedly had both a rifle and a handgun accessible, raising immediate fears for public safety.

Shots Fired and Weapons Recovered

Faced with the armed suspect refusing to comply, an officer discharged his weapon to prevent further danger. The man was struck and subdued before additional harm could occur. Officers then recovered two firearms — a semi-automatic rifle with an extended magazine and a handgun.

One officer at the scene can be heard on video footage saying:

“He’s still moving. Hold on. Let me get gloves. I’ve got it. The weapons are secure.”

No officers or civilians were reported injured during the confrontation. Authorities have not yet released the suspect’s name, nor have they disclosed his current medical condition following the shooting.

Community Concerns and Public Reaction

The incident has drawn significant attention from the community, particularly as it occurred in a busy nightlife area where hundreds of people often gather on weekends.

Some residents expressed relief that officers acted swiftly to prevent what could have been a mass shooting, while others voiced concern about rising gun-related violence in Colorado Springs.

“It’s frightening to think something like this can happen right where we go out with friends,” said one witness who asked not to be named. “The police did their job, but it makes you wonder how safe these places really are.”

Ongoing Investigation

The Colorado Springs Police Department (CSPD) has launched a full investigation into the incident. The case will also be reviewed by an independent oversight board, in line with department policy regarding officer-involved shootings.

Investigators will seek to determine how the suspect obtained the weapons, whether they were legally owned, and what led to the altercation in the first place.

CSPD released a brief statement:

“This was a rapidly evolving situation where officers were confronted with an immediate threat. While we are grateful no civilians or officers were harmed, we recognize the seriousness of this incident and will conduct a thorough investigation.”

A Broader Debate on Gun Violence

This case adds to ongoing conversations about public safety, nightlife security, and firearm access in Colorado Springs. In recent years, the city has seen several high-profile shootings, including the tragic 2022 attack at Club Q.

Local leaders say more discussions are needed about how to balance nightlife culture with community safety. Advocacy groups are also calling for stricter gun control measures to help prevent similar scenarios.

As investigations continue, the public awaits further details from CSPD, including the identity of the suspect and whether charges will be filed if he survives his injuries.
