NEW TODAY

18-YEAR-OLD SKYDIVER’S PARACHUTE DIDN’T OPEN ON JUMP

What began as a day of excitement and new adventure ended in devastating tragedy when 18-year-old Tyler Turner’s first skydiving experience turned fatal. His parachute never opened, causing him to plunge 13,000 feet to his death. His mother, Francine, watched helplessly from the ground as the nightmare unfolded before her eyes.

A Nervous but Excited Teenager

On the morning of the jump in 2016, Tyler recorded a short video just minutes before boarding the aircraft. In it, his youthful energy and nervous excitement were apparent.

“My name is Tyler Turner. I am going to jump out of a plane. It’s my first time,” he said, flashing a tentative smile as his mother looked on.

Francine, who had always been her son’s greatest supporter, stood proudly in the background. Tyler even introduced her in the video:

“That’s my mom over there. Very loving mom in my life. I hope she’ll help me with more of my life because I want to make it.”

Those would tragically become some of his final recorded words.

The Jump That Turned Deadly

As the aircraft soared into the clear California skies, Tyler was strapped to his tandem instructor for what should have been a routine jump. But the moment they leapt from the plane, something went horribly wrong.

Neither the main parachute nor the reserve chute deployed. In a horrifying freefall, Tyler and his instructor plummeted to the ground. Both were killed instantly.

“I saw the ambulances, the sheriff’s cars, police, fire engines—all of it in the distance,” Francine later recounted. “I thought, Oh my gosh, my son is hurt. We need to get to the hospital. Then I realized it was worse than that. My son was gone.”

Investigators later revealed an unsettling truth: the tandem instructor assigned to Tyler was not properly certified to take students on jumps.

A Troubled Skydiving Center

The accident occurred at the Lodi Parachute Center in California, a facility with a long and controversial history. Since the 1980s, the center has reportedly been linked to at least 20 other fatalities.

Paul Vanderwaald, the attorney representing Tyler’s family, criticized the operation as dangerously unregulated:

“This was not your normal skydive operation. It wasn’t run like a professional business. It was run more like a weekend hobby club, where people happened to be skydivers.”

The revelations left the Turner family stunned. “Were you shocked to hear how many other fatalities there had been there?” Francine was asked in an interview. “Absolutely I was,” she replied.

The Court’s Verdict: $40 Million in Damages

After years of legal battles, a California judge recently found the Lodi Parachute Center negligent in Tyler’s death. The court awarded $40 million in damages to the Turner family.

While no settlement can erase the grief of losing a child, the family felt a measure of relief that accountability had finally been established.

“It’s satisfying knowing that we were able to do something—we were able to get some justice for our son,” Vanderwaald said on their behalf.

A Promising Life Cut Short

Tyler was more than just a thrill-seeking teenager. He had a bright academic future ahead of him, having earned a full scholarship to study biomedical engineering in college. He was known as a straight-A student, deeply loved by his teachers, friends, and family.

“He was an amazing kid,” said one of his siblings. “He was definitely the most well-behaved of us all. He worked the hardest in school. He just really enjoyed life.”

Turning Grief into a Legacy

The Turner family now hopes to channel their grief into something meaningful. They plan to use the settlement money to create a scholarship fund in Tyler’s name, ensuring that his love for learning and his drive to succeed will inspire future students.

“We can’t bring him back,” Francine said, fighting back tears, “but we can make sure his legacy lives on.”

Tyler’s tragic story is both a stark reminder of the dangers of poorly regulated extreme sports and a powerful testament to a young man’s short but inspiring life.
