Phoenix Police Release Bodycam: SWAT Shootout Leaves 2 Officers Injured, Suspect Critical

PHOENIX, AZ — Newly released body-worn camera footage from the Phoenix Police Department reveals the tense moments when a SWAT operation to serve a search warrant turned into a dramatic gun battle that left two officers injured and the suspect in critical condition.

The incident took place early on the morning of September 2, 2025, near 17th Avenue and Tonto Street, as members of the Special Assignment Unit (SAU) attempted to execute a high-risk search warrant connected to an ongoing criminal investigation.

The Incident: From Breach to Gunfire in Seconds

According to the Phoenix Police Department, officers approached the apartment shortly after sunrise. Bodycam footage shows heavily armed officers stacking up outside the front door, preparing to breach. Just as the first officer began to break through the door, gunfire erupted from inside.

The suspect fired multiple shots toward the entry team, striking one officer. Another officer sustained non-gunshot injuries while moving to cover. The SAU team immediately returned fire in a controlled volley, hitting the suspect.

Despite the chaotic moments, officers can be heard shouting commands for everyone inside to come out with their hands up. The situation escalated quickly but was brought under control within minutes.

Both injured officers were rushed to a nearby hospital and, after treatment, were released the same day. The suspect, however, was transported in critical condition with life-threatening injuries.

Witness Accounts and Community Reaction

Residents in the neighborhood described waking up to the sound of gunfire and sirens. Several neighbors told reporters they saw officers running toward the apartment with shields and rifles.

“I heard what sounded like five or six shots, then yelling. It was terrifying,” said Maria Gomez, who lives across the street. “I’m just glad the officers are going to be okay.”

The police presence in the area was significant, with multiple streets blocked off for several hours while investigators collected evidence and ensured there were no further threats.

Transparency Through Bodycam Footage

Phoenix Police emphasized their commitment to transparency by releasing the bodycam footage just two weeks after the shooting.

“This was a dangerous and dynamic situation,” said Sgt. Anthony Ramirez, a spokesperson for the department. “Releasing this video allows the public to see what our officers faced and how they responded under fire. Our goal is to be as open as possible with our community.”

Status of the Suspect and Ongoing Investigation

As of September 16, 2025, the suspect remains hospitalized in critical condition. Two other individuals who were inside the apartment at the time were detained without injury and are cooperating with investigators.

The Maricopa County Attorney’s Office and the department’s internal affairs division are conducting parallel investigations, which is standard procedure for any officer-involved shooting.

Police have not yet released the name of the suspect, citing privacy and the ongoing nature of the case.

Officers Recovering, Department Thankful

Chief Michael Sullivan released a statement expressing gratitude that both injured officers are expected to make full recoveries.

“Our officers put themselves in harm’s way every day to keep Phoenix safe,” Sullivan said. “Their courage under fire saved lives that morning. We are thankful for the outpouring of support from the community.”
